A matted coat can be very painful to a pet, limit movement, and contribute to skin infections, as air cannot get into the skin. Medium/Long haired dogs should be brushed and combed at least twice a week to keep hair tangle free. Short haired dogs should be brushed once a week to distribute skin oils and keep coat healthy. Many times, pet professionals hear owners say that their pet does not like to be brushed. While this may be true, it usually means the pet guardian is not taking the time to brush their pet properly. Some pets may be more difficult, but remember that you are doing it to keep them healthy. If you are unable to brush your pet weekly, we can help you.
Start practicing now. Have everyone in the family gently touch and rub your pet's ears, tail, and especially paws often. Start slowly, but be firm. If your pet refuses to have his or her feet/ears touched, do not let go. If you release, your pets will learn quickly that putting up a fight allows them to have their way. Gently keep holding on until your pet relaxes; hold for a couple of seconds, let go, and try again later until your pet fully allows you to touch him or her at any time. Do this anytime you are relaxing with your pet, watching tv, etc. This will help your pet become accustomed to being handled, by groomers, and veterinary professionals alike.
We will gladly brush your dog's teeth at your request; however, toothbrushing is not just about fresh breath; it is another procedure that must be done often (at least twice a week). Dogs do not get cavities, but their overall health depends greatly on oral health. This is a process that dogs would rather live without, and they will let you know how they feel about it every time, but you must prevail and you must be consistent. "Arguing" with your dog is not a lot of fun, but if you love your dog and you want to help him or her live as long as possible and prevent disease, it must be done! Cats (and also dogs) may need their teeth professionally cleaned as recommended by your veterinary doctor. Ask us about our clean teeth gel to reduce plaque between cleanings.
The type of food you feed your pet is very important. Many pets are allergic to soy, wheat, corn, and other products that are added to cheap food, not to mention colorings and preservatives. By investing a little more in a premium, more natural brand, you will actually save money. While the premium brands are somewhat more expensive, you may end up feeding less (cheap foods have more fillers; therefore you are required to feed more per pound of body weight). You may also prevent skin problems, hair loss (bald spots), and allergies; thus saving on veterinary bills. Do not feed your pet processed human foods, or you will be defeating the purpose of their premium diets and wasting the money you spent on quality pet food.
Prevention is key. Have your pet checked by a veterinary doctor at least once a year. Keep all vaccines up to date as required by your vet, and use monthly prevention medications, such as heart worm preventatives and flea/tick spot treatments (try natural products during colder months when fleas/ticks are less active). Keep your pets healthy and living longer by exercising them every day based on their breed and temperament. Putting them out in the backyard is not enough. Dogs and cats need attention and exercise. Dogs are "wired" to roam and need a daily walk. A tired dog is a good dog. Exercise will also help reduce chewing, barking, and other anxiety induced behaviors.
Most of all, remember that dogs and cats are companion animals. They are not meant to be left alone all day, every day. Cats are more independent, but they still need you. Dogs are pack animals and suffer greatly if left alone for prolonged periods of time. If you do not yet have a pet, decide if you can incorporate your future pet's needs into your busy life. If you already have a pet, get up earlier, come home earlier, have a family member walk and play with your pet, or hire a professional service such as Paw Naturel to provide exercise for your pet. While dogs should be exercised year round, they should be protected from excessive weather conditions.
